Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) is a gene that encodes a member of the PDGF/VEGF growth factor family. The protein functions as a glycosylated mitogen and acts on endothelial cells to increase vascular permeability, angiogenesis, vasculogenesis, endothelial cell growth, and cell migration. The protein also inhibits apoptosis. Missense mutations, nonsense mutations, silent mutations, and frameshift insertions are observed in cancers such as endometrial cancer, intestinal cancer, and skin cancer.
