Overview

NCI Definition: A carcinoma arising from squamous epithelial cells. Morphologically, it is characterized by the proliferation of atypical, often pleomorphic squamous cells. Squamous cell carcinomas are graded by the degree of cellular differentiation as well, moderately, or poorly differentiated. Well differentiated carcinomas are usually associated with keratin production and the presence of intercellular bridges between adjacent cells. Representative examples are lung squamous cell carcinoma, skin squamous cell carcinoma, and cervical squamous cell carcinoma. [1]

Squamous cell carcinomas most frequently harbor alterations in TP53, CDKN2A, PIK3CA, KMT2D, and NOTCH1 [2].

Most Commonly Altered Genes in Squamous Cell Carcinoma

TP53 Mutation, TP53 Missense, TP53 c.217-c.1178 Missense, PIK3CA Mutation, and KMT2D Mutation are the most common alterations in squamous cell carcinoma [2].
